2024 HLA ANNUAL BAR SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is being offered to one third year law student sitting for the Texas Bar Exam in July 2024 at each Houston area law school. The 3L law students will each be awarded $5,000.00.

Application Timeline

• Applications open January 1, 2024.

• A complete application must be received by 5:00 p.m., March 1, 2024, to be considered for an award.

• Winners will be announced on March 15, 2024.

• The awards will be given on April 20, 2024, at the HLA Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala. Finalists MUST be present!

Selection Criteria

• A demonstrated commitment to developing and promoting the African American community through law.

• Academic performance in law school.

• Leadership skills, community activities and/or special accomplishments.

• Financial need.

Requirements

• Membership in an underrepresented minority group.

• Current enrollment in a Houston-area, ABA-accredited law school (University of Houston Law Center, South Texas College of Law, and Thurgood Marshall School of Law).

• Completed electronic application form.

• Law School transcript(s) (unofficial version accepted).

• Current resume.

• Essay - In 500 words or less, please explain how this HLA scholarship will help make a difference to you in meeting your goal of engaging in the practice of law. Also, please include how you plan to aid the African American community through the practice of law.

• Intent to take the Texas State Bar Exam in July 2024.
